• Il Pupo Siciliano IV (2011) 13.75 x 11.75 oil on panel |
Pupo is Italian for Sicilian string puppet. They have been an important tradition since Antiquity, in which some say even pre-date actors in theatre. Italy is considered by many to be the early home of string puppets thanks to the influence of Roman puppetry. They have been used for story-telling, either as fairy tales or reenactments of stories but with the birth of the Commedia dell’Arte, they became comedic commentaries. Like the renewed interest of these now rare puppets, Sharon Okun has revived this nearly forgotten tradition. |
